March Madness, home of the Cameron Crazies

My favorite US NCAA basketball team of all time, the Duke University Blue Devils, is headed for the No. 1 seed going into The Tournament.

It’s not just the rich winning tradition of the Blue Devils that attract me to the school on Cameron Campus.

It’s not the products of the Blue Devil factory line of players either: GQ cover models Christian Laettner and Grant Hill, Elton Brand, Shane Battier, Jason Williams, Luol Deng, Chris Duhon, Mike Dunleavy Jr. and my favorite, JJ Redick.

It’s not about coach K, too, and his school of coaching I’d adhere to if ever I became coach.

It’s about the Cameron Crazies–those blue-colored, passionate fans who make Duke home games a television spectacle.

How?

Imagine, in the heat of the battle, you’re a visiting team, you’re down by a point and you are on the free throw line. And then out of the corner of your eye, there where you have a fisheye-view of your surroundings, you catch a glimpse of this:

…Or, just as you make your way into the coach K court, you are greeted by a sight of fans in pray-over pose who never stop shaking their hands throughout the entire game.

…Now, imagine coming off a timeout. You are alone in the sidelines, about to make a very crucial inbounds in the dying seconds of a close ballgame. And you know, you just know, that from behind you, Cameron’s finest are “praying over” you. To make an error.

Call them crazy.

Or, specifically, the Cameron Crazies.
